Principal’s Welcome

2017 is the year we say, happy 130th birthday St Aloysius College! From small beginnings in 1887 this proud Catholic school is today a vibrant and growing Mercy community, still youthful and energetic despite entering its fourteenth decade.

The world of 1887 is a vastly different one to that of 2017. When the Sisters first opened the doors on what was no doubt a scorching February morning.

2017 isn't just a milestone year but rather a year to take stock, to celebrate 130 years of people, of families, of ideas, of achievements and of community. In so many tangible and real ways, the school you see and visit today carries on the spirit of 1887, a pioneer spirit, a determined spirit, a spirit of Mercy.

There are many true and lasting hallmarks of an all girls' Catholic education at St Aloysius College that have defined this corner of North Melbourne throughout its long and proud existence: there is a personal best commitment, there is also a genuine commitment to service, to helping those less fortunate, there is a commitment to friends and neighbours, a commitment to welcome and to hospitality, to getting involved in all aspects of school life and a commitment to knowing all as individuals. We are rightly proud of our facilities, our modern learning areas, our renowned pastoral care programs and flourishing academic excellence but we are equally defined by the spirit best summed up in our school motto, Strive for Higher Things. As we turn the page on our 130th year we are a school young at heart, dynamic in vision and honest in dealings, with students and staff working in tandem, sharing an energy and love for learning.

I trust you will find the information within our website useful – in telling you more about the special qualities of our school and the outstanding all-round education we offer - but the best way to experience what St Aloysius has to offer is to visit us. I welcome you all to our school in this most special of years and look forward to witnessing how you and your family will add to the rich traditions of St Aloysius College, weaving your own folklore of achievement and endeavour into the grand tapestry of 130 years of exceptional education for girls.

In the footsteps of Catherine McAuley,
