From the Principal

Throughout the term, students have been able to complement their learning program with a host of co-curricular activities – and they certainly took up the opportunity! In just four school weeks, students were debating, they were acting, dancing, singing and producing the 2022 College Production, they were being informed in the Language Club and keeping fit in various sporting activities, whilst attending year level reflection days as well as serving others in social justice activities. I applaud all students who embraced these valuable opportunities by getting involved.

2023 National Reconciliation Week- 27 May – 3 June

At the end of this month, as a nation we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. It is a time for all Australians to reflect upon our shared histories, and on the contributions and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. The week is framed by two key events in Australia’s history that provide strong symbols of the aspirations for reconciliation:

May 27 marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 Referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and recognise them in the national census.

June 3 is Mabo Day – on this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which overturned the notion of ‘terra nullius’ and legally recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ connection to their country, a connection that existed prior to colonisation and continues today. This recognition paved the way for the Native Title system.

As we move to the week ahead, let’s be Mercy in action and prayer:

Psalm 119
Out of God’s deepest mercy, dawn will come from the
heavens.
God, teach me your ways
and I will follow them closely.
Help me understand your will,
that I many cherish your law.
Guide me along your path,
a way of delight.
Open my heart to your laws
and not to riches.
Let me speak the whole truth,
For I await your justice.
I keep your word, now and always.
Remember what you promised me,
I wait in hope.
In sorrow, this is my comfort:
Your life-giving word.

Best wishes,

Mary Farah
