Reflection on Global Change and Shared History

Over the past fortnight, the world has witnessed several profound moments of global significance—each inviting us to pause, reflect, and consider the values that shape our shared humanity.

Foremost among these was the historic announcement of a new Pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the first US-born pontiff and will be known as Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a significant moment for the global Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV brings with him a deep pastoral sensibility, a commitment to dialogue, and a profound sense of mission. For Catholic communities around the world—and for us, as a Catholic Mercy school—his appointment renews our call to lead lives grounded in compassion, justice, and faith.

Also marked in recent days was the solemn commemoration of the end of World War Two. On May 8, known internationally as Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), the conclusion of the war in Europe was remembered.

This moment in history remains a powerful reminder of the cost of conflict and the courage of those who fought for freedom and peace. Around the world, communities gathered to honour the memory of those who sacrificed so much. These commemorations are more than historical acknowledgments—they are acts of collective remembrance, calling us to uphold the dignity of every person, the importance of global unity, and our shared responsibility to protect peace. For our students, these events provide important lessons in resilience, justice, and hope.

Within our own community, we also took time to honour and celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures who play such a vital role in the lives of our students. On Friday 9 May, we welcomed many of them to a special Mother’s Day Breakfast, filled with warmth, gratitude, and connection. We thank all who joined us for this memorable occasion. A heartfelt thank you goes to our guest speakers, who generously shared their professional journeys, offering inspiring insights into leadership, resilience, and the balance of career and family.

As an educational community, it is vital that we take time to acknowledge these broader moments. They remind us that we are part of a global narrative—one that calls each of us, in our own way, to lead lives of integrity, understanding, and responsibility
