From the Senior Years

This term, several Year 11 students have put themselves forward for consideration and leadership training. This is commendable and involves significant commitment from students to reflect on their leadership strengths, work in teams in a range of scenarios to demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and initiative, and to develop their communication skills, all of which are part of their consideration for Prefect positions in 2025. This is a highly rigorous process and offers invaluable learnings for all students involved.

As part of the Unit 2 Health and Human Development curriculum, students have taken on the challenge of learning about human development. Students have been tasked with caring for a live-action baby that simulates the developmental demands of an infant and requires students to take on parenting and caring responsibilities.

Below is a short reflection from students in the Unit 2 Health and Human Development class about their key learnings:

This week the Year 11 Health and Human Development class had the opportunity to experience what the responsibility of looking after a ‘baby’ would be like. For 24 hours, we each looked after an electronic simulation virtual baby. This experience related to our new Unit 2 outcome of development transitions. We all learned about the responsibility needed to care for an infant with minimal development and the difficulties it comes with.
The experience was challenging, and the babies tested all of our patience and our sleep routines! Some babies were programmed to be more challenging than others, so some got lucky or not. Next week we explore the topic of ‘Considerations in becoming a parent,’ such as responsibilities, and the availability of social and emotional support and resources. This will be interesting to explore after this experience we have just had.
Overall, it was fun, but we were all happy to return the ‘babies’ after our 24 hours!

For Year 12 students, the focus has turned towards VCAA examination and the VTAC process for registering course preferences for 2025 student pathways. Whether this involves direct entry to university or TAFE, deferment or apprenticeship, or full-time work, I know a number of conversations will no doubt have been occurring at home. Career and Pathways Leader, Ms Audrey Abelardo, will guide students through the VTAC process with registration opening on Monday, 29 July. Details of the VTAC process for students to lodge their desired course preferences can be accessed and completed online using the hyperlink above.

Additionally, students, parents, and carers are advised to familiarize themselves with the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application process as it relates to their experience in the VCE years. Full details and the process can be found here.

Should you or your child have any questions, these can be directed to Ms Abelardo for further clarification.
