From the Senior Years

As Senior students in Year 11 and 12 head towards the end of Term 2, it really does finish with a flurry of activity, fun and success on both the sporting field, on the stage and in academic performance at external competitions.

St Aloysius Day on Monday 16 June was the annual feast day of the College patron saint, St Aloysius. I commend all Senior students in both year levels for their participation in the College whole school mass. They led the College impressively with their reverence and sense of occasion. Blazers were resplendent.

With St Aloysius, the patron saint of ‘youth’ and young people, it is fitting that the day is one of joyful celebration – best captured in the photos of the Senior disco. The dance off was one for the ages!

Some amazing costumes were on display in fitting resemblance to an array of Aussie icons, including five spitting images of a current staff member and Year level leader. The likeness and attention to detail was devastatingly accurate.

CGSAV AFL Premiers 2025

Congratulations to the Senior AFL team for its historic CGSAV AFL Premiership win in 2025. This was a fantastic result and adds silverware to the St Aloysius College trophy cabinet. Congratulations to all the Senior players and to coach Ms Emma Turner, trainer Ms Abby Luke and Head of Sport, Mr Tom Madden for steering the team to a fantastic tournament result.

On Friday 13 June, a large group of girls played football in the GCSAV AFL tournament. We had the best time! Even though quite a few of us had never played before and the nerves were getting to us, we were able to come home as the grand final winners!

We had three rules for our matches:
1. Fun
2. Teamwork
3. Space
and once we got a bit more confident, we added a fourth: Win.

We had a few injuries throughout the day, but that didn’t slow us down. There were so many amazing players on the field, Annie-Rose with her goals, Mary-Grace (who won Player of the Match for a reason), and Gemma, who had some of the best tackles. And of course, Sophie, who not only taught me the rules and how to play before the matches, but also kicked a very impressive goal through someone’s legs. It was such a good day, and I cannot thank all the teachers enough for letting us participate. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without Ms Turner and Ms Luke steering the ship.

College Production – Showtime!

This week marks the production week, a culmination for student rehearsal, preparation, singing and dancing practice. I look forward to seeing the performance on Friday evening and I know that all students involved will raise the roof.

Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition

On Wednesday 18 June, students studying Italian travelled to the University of Melbourne to compete in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition. This was an enriching learning experience for students to practice their Italian. This excursion involved a visit to COASIT and Carlton surrounds – a well known area that Italian migrants made home and a business area for all things Italian in the 1950-70s. Thank you to Ms Stangherlin for leading the excursion and facilitating this opportunity for student learning.

On Wednesday, the Year 9s to Year 12 Italian students were lucky enough to take part in the famous Dante Competition where we had to recite Italian poetry. This state competition is a big part of the Italian subject in Victoria. Hopefully we have some State finalists in the running!

After everyone finished reciting their poems, we were treated to a Tour of Brunetti's - the famous and original Italian desserts established in Melbourne. We were fortunate to see inside their industrial kitchen and how they made cakes and sweet treats. As a reward for our hard dedication to memorising and reciting these poems, we also received a free ice-cream which I'm sure everyone enjoyed. It was a splendid day.

This Wednesday, Italian students from years 9-12 went on an excursion to Carlton for the annual Dante Alighieri competition! After weeks of practice, each student recited their poem in front of an assessor at Melbourne Uni, before an insightful trip to Co As It to explore the Italian immigration exhibition. Students were treated to two scoops of Brunetti's ice cream, and got a tour of the historical restaurant, learning about the birthplace of many ongoing Italian traditions in Australia!

To finish the extraordinary day, students ventured off into surrounding streets for a delicious lunch with friends. Overall, It was a fantastic opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Italian culture, discovering new aspects of its history and influence in Australia, while enjoying a few sweet treats!

“On Wednesday, Italian students from Years 9-11 went to the University of Melbourne to compete in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition, which required us to memorise and recite a poem to a judge. After everyone recited their poem, we went to Lygon St and were able to learn more about Brunetti Classico with a tour through the kitchen, as well as enjoy some of their delicious ice cream. During the tour, we learnt more about the layout of the restaurant, its origin, and the importance of Italian culture and community over the years. Overall, it was a really fun day for everyone, and gave us an opportunity to learn more about Italian culture in Melbourne.”
