An enthusiastic return

From the Senior Years

Term 3 has begun with Year 12 students making an enthusiastic return to their studies.

There are many metaphors that could be used to describe Term 3 in the VCE. For those who follow AFL, the third quarter is often decisive in determining the outcome of the Grand Final, with some calling it the ‘premiership quarter.’

For those who follow the Tour de France, there are some similarities when describing the ebb and flow of Term 3 compared to a Tour de France stage. Like the ‘parkour’ of a race stage, Term 3 begins with a gradual uphill that is later punctuated by steeper climbs in the final half of the stage, mirroring the rhythm from Weeks 6 – 8 being a busy period for students. This Term affords students with the opportunity to refine their understanding, put in to practice the advice from teachers and stay calm and measured in their approach to their studies.

Alongside the academic demands of the VCE, a number of students have achieved amazing results across several State-wide competitions in public speaking and languages. These are commendable achievements as part of their co-curricular contributions to College culture.

These are often areas of school life that will leave a lasting impression, not only the individual performances and outcomes achieved by Senior students for their own memories of their VCE years, but they also leave an important impression on the wider College community. For younger students the Senior students are role models of Mercy values and the College motto Ad Altiora – strive for higher things.

College Co-captains Message for Term 3
Entering this new term, a mix of nerves and excitement filled us, knowing it marks the beginning of our final official chapter at school. This final stretch is a time to push ourselves, make lasting memories and stay motivated.

Over the holidays, a majority of the cohort spent time consolidating on previous coursework completed earlier this year, whilst also preparing for what lies ahead. This was important in providing us with the confidence needed to embark on the journey of this new term. Some of us also were able to attend holiday classes at the College, which provided us with the opportunity to ask questions and seek extra resources from our teachers. Others took the initiative to attend external revision lectures, checking out the competition of other students from schools across Victoria. It was eye-opening to experience these sessions and could be something to consider again in September, as they are valuable learning opportunities.

As we approach Term 3, the end year is becoming increasingly imminent, so a break was needed. Some of us used it as time to relax and recharge, while for others it was used as a time to get a head start on revision and prep for exams. Most of us tried to find a balance between rest and staying on top of things, which was quite challenging. But ensuring that we continue to balance our time effectively will help us stay motivated in the busy weeks ahead. Term 3 is a big term, with many SACs and revision. But coming into the term with a clear head and a great motivation, we are ready for this to take it on.

Finally, we wish the entire year level success for the remainder of the school year, filled with both academic accomplishments, personal triumphs and countless unforgettable moments along the way.

Year 12 French: Model United Nations (French language edition)

Today the students in Year 12 French participated in a French simulation of a United Nations General Assembly. We represented South Africa, and the topic was 'Preserving human rights in the face of AI development'. We were welcomed with an official video message from Antonio Guterres & Ben Carroll. The day begins with a presentation of our Statement of Position, followed by moderated and unmoderated causes, ending with voting on amendments. This day gave an accurate experience of being delegates for your country, having to completely understand the situation there and the multiple aspects of our complex issue. In this day, students practiced the skills of listening, articulating ideas, negotiating in a diplomatic context, standing for your point of view.
