From the Senior Years
In the past fortnight, Year 12 students welcomed Year 12 past student and former College co-captain and Old Aloysian Association (OAA) member Bethany Pearce (Class of 2021) to the College.
Hearing about the post-Year 12 stories and destinations is an important aspect of the pastoral program and one that enriches and broadens student perspectives about their next steps after they graduate.
Behtany spoke about her experiences at St Aloysius College and her post-Year 12 journey into nursing and health care. She spoke about how embracing courage in the face of self doubt and the myriad possibilities that the end of Year 12 can bring. Bethany described herself as not particularly academic and said that her desire to care for others motivated her journey into nursing. She encouraged students to find their passion and to seek out as many experiences and opportunities to find out what truly inspires their learning and contribution to the wider world.
This was followed by a Year 12 morning tea as hospitality to Bethany and to all Year 12s as they enter the final crucial weeks of their Term 3 learning.
For, Year 11 students there were a number of standout achievements on the sporting field and in languages.
This included the Senior Futsal team who qualified for the ACS Senior Girls’ Futsal finals, shown in the photos above. It is a major achievement to make a final in any sporting competition, so this is a commendable result. Moreover, given that St Aloysius College are relative newcomers to the ACS competition, having only joined in 2023, this is even more notable. The College has a much smaller pool of female student athletes to choose from than the larger schools, such as Overnewton College.
The girls played well as a team and narrowly lost in the final 5-8 to the eventual winners Overnewton. The actions shots clearly show that it was a fast and highly competitive game.
Well done to Mr Glenister and the squad on making the finals. Hopefully next year the team can go one better.
Japanese Language Speech Contest Victoria: Catherine Fu (Y11) 2nd Place
Congratulations to Catherine Fu who participated in the annual Japanese Language Speech Contest Victoria on Sunday 23 August, finishing second overall on this Victoria-wide competition. This is a terrific result and credit to Catherine’s dedication and skill in Japanese. Well done to Bina sensei for his support and teaching in Japanese language.
Catherine writes:
I was honoured to achieve 2nd place in the High School Division. In my speech, entitled ‘My Grandmother’s Words’, I spoke about how my journey of language loss and gain has shaped what language means to me. A meaning, that was exemplified throughout the day, as I listened to and learnt from the experiences shared in the contestants’ speeches.
I loved being able to connect with Japanese Language learners from other schools, and left with not only a sense of fulfilment, but new friendships made with fellow language enthusiasts.
A big thank you to Mizuno-Sensei, for her help in my speech refinement and pronunciation, and especially to Bina-Sensei, for his assistance over these past two months in writing and rehearsing my speech – and for coming to support me on the day.
