From the Senior Years Leader

What an action-packed week for our VCE students, Pastoral leaders and teachers as part of the STRIVE Program 2024.

This new 2024 initiative was a resounding success, with students achieving all key outcomes of challenging themselves, striving to work collaboratively outside of their social circle and learning how to think critically and creatively, while embracing genuine risk in a safe and supportive way.

Highlights included:

  • Inspirational guidance from two keynote speakers – for Year 11 students, Eric Ageyman who spoke to the power of language in ‘leading self, leading others’ and for Year 12 students, Glen Gerryn in his ‘Brilliant Young Mind’ seminar. I encourage parents to use his material in conversation with students this year
  • Embracing risk through the ‘challenge by choice’ model for physical activity that included Hardrock rock climbing for Year 12 and Adventure Escape Rooms for Year 11 students
  • Students’ awe and engagement with ‘artful critical thinking’ at the impressive National Gallery of Victoria for Year 12 students and the State Library of Victoria’s ‘VCE research skills session’ - both are important cultural institutions of learning beyond the walls of the College
  • Deepening their practice of yoga, mindfulness and nutrition, as well as embracing physical activity through boxing
  • Hospitality and team work in small group trivia, where students appreciated the special knowledge skillsets of their peers

I commend and congratulate all who participated in the three day program. With very few camps being able to run in the past few years, I hope that this provided students with fond memories for the future.

The Year 12 STRIVE program has provided our cohort with many different opportunities - challenge by choice, art tours, and body enrichment. The activity of rock climbing proved to be a physical challenge for most, while also being completely fun to participate in. The National Gallery of Victoria was equally entertaining, with a guided tour through each aspect, allows us to understand the reason for art. All around this program has allowed us to explore our preferences and the things we enjoy - there was something for everyone.
