Competition and Performance

From Year 10

Last week, the College celebrated St Aloysius Day, the annual feast day of our patron saint. The day was filled with fun activities, along with opportunities to reflect on and discuss social justice and how we can demonstrate Mercy values to those in need. A huge thank you to all the students who attended and participated in this important day.

A number of Year 10 students, along with students from Year 9, 11, and 12, attended the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition, where they recited their poems. Congratulations on the great effort they have made.

This week is the production week, with a number of Year 10 students involved in intensive rehearsals and preparations for both cast and crew. I have the privilege of being part of the team and I am very proud of what Year 10 students have achieved so far. They have always displayed Mercy spirit of perseverance, looking after themselves as well as their peers. Students should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Participating in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition held by the University of Melbourne was both a valuable cultural experience and an excellent opportunity to prepare for our Year 12 VCE Italian oral exam! Miss Stangherlin and Schiliro provided us with a supportive and safe environment to practice and perform with confidence, offering us lunches, recesses and class time to refine our delivery and pronunciation. It was especially exciting to walk around the University of Melbourne campus and finally perform the poem we had been rehearsing for weeks. After we had finished the competition, we explored Lygon Street, which was full of culture and entertainment! In Lygon Street, we first had a tour around Brunetti classico, which was a perfect way to celebrate our hard work and learn about significant Italian figures who have shaped our city, then we briefly went to the Italian Museum where we had the chance to reflect on the stories and contributions of Italians in Australia.

We recently completed our mid-year exams, with everyone putting in great effort and showing real dedication to their studies. Well done to all! After all the hard work, St. Aloysius Day was the perfect way to relax and have some fun. It was such a joy to see everyone’s awesome costumes—so much creativity and enthusiasm on display! One of the highlights of the day had to be the teacher race, which had everyone cheering on their houses and teachers, showing real house spirit (go McAuley!). It was a fantastic way to bring the whole school together and celebrate.

On June 18, Year 9–12 Italian students visited Melbourne University to recite their poems for the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition. After weeks of preparation, everyone was proud of their efforts and excited to perform. Following the competition, our teachers organised a fantastic afternoon on Lygon Street. We toured Brunetti’s, saw how their famous treats are made, and enjoyed delicious gelato. We then had time to explore the vibrant Italian culture of the area. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience. Thank you to everyone who made the day so special!
