Embracing the Challenge

From Year 10

Year 10 students have had a very busy start of the term with a number of curriculum-enriching excursions and activities, as well as the Art and Technology Exhibition. Congratulations to our talented Year 10 Visual Arts and Technology students received awards at the Melbourne Royal Show during the holiday.

As the ACS senior competition concluded, Year 10 students participated in the Leadership in Mercy program designed to extend their learning and personal growth. Students participated in Mercy in Action projects which linked to their House social justice themes and had the opportunity to receive career related advice and learn about resume writing from RMIT. Students also participated in various physical activities, mindfulness workshops that focus on general wellbeing, leading with collaboration, and further developing a growth mindset for their upcoming examinations.

In this week’s Wellbeing session, we had the privilege to have Angelica from This is your Body, to talk to our students about food and mood. Angelica also shared some insights of how important it is to include plants in the diet.

This term promises to be busy yet fruitful as we finish off the school year. As we dive into this busy term, students are encouraged to embrace the challenge and make the most of it.

Last week, the politics class and I (Laura) received an opportunity to visit the parliament of Victoria. Though I have been to the Canberra parliament, visiting the parliament of Victoria gives me a better insight of the different parliaments in Australia to make the trip exciting for me. As we walked in, we went through a scanning area and remove all the items we have on us which feel intense. We then meet a friendly speaker who explained to us the history behind the parliament and its relation to the Gold Rush. We all had a chance to do a roleplay the process of law making which makes everyone laugh. That was an interesting experience! Throughout Term 4, we have also had the opportunity to participate in Mercy in Action activities such as yoga, lawn bowls, and food donations. This week, my group and I (Marcus) visited The Big Issue to learn more about homelessness and the many challenges people experiencing homelessness face. We gained a deeper understanding of their struggles while also learning ways to support those in need. Overall, Term 4 has started positively, and we are excited to see what the rest of the term has to offer

Last Friday, I, along with the rest of my year 10 politics class went on an excursion to state parliament. We participated in a Parliamentary Role play in both chambers, the legislative council and assembly, and saw some of the artwork that adores the historic building. Overall it was an engaging way to learn about our democracy.

This term, every Wednesday, the year 10s will participate in the Leadership in Mercy Program that is running instead of ACS. Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Riverside golf course and got to practise at the driving range. For many students, who enjoy or play golf, it was an opportunity to refine and practise their skills, as well as show off to their friends. For others, like me, it was an amazing chance to have fun, learn how to swing, and (hopefully) actually hit the ball. So far the program has been incredible and I can't wait for what the following weeks will hold!
