Sew Much Fun!

From Year 7

This term in Year 7 Design Technology, students have been working through a structured and engaging task designed to build their foundational skills in design technology. The focus of the task is to design and create a plush pillow, allowing students to apply the design process from concept to completion.

As part of the task, students are developing key practical skills, including fabric cutting, basic hand sewing, and safe and effective use of the sewing machine. They began by exploring the design brief, brainstorming ideas, and creating sketches of their custom pillow designs. Each student’s final product will reflect their individual creativity while demonstrating their understanding of the steps involved in planning and constructing a textile item.

Ms Grujovski, who is guiding students through the task, shared his appreciation for their efforts. “The Year 7s have shown great focus and determination throughout this unit. It’s clear they’re not only learning new skills, but also taking pride in their work. I’m really proud of what they’ve achieved so far,” she said. Not to play favourites, Ms Grujovski also made special note of 7B's amazing approach to their pillows.

While it may seem like a lot of fun, this task is also an important introduction to Design Technology at the secondary level, helping students to develop confidence with materials and equipment while understanding the importance of the design process. It also supports wider learning goals such as problem-solving, creativity, and resilience—skills that will support them across a range of learning areas. Oh, and also, they get a cool pillow at the end!
