From Year 7
Our Year 7 students have spent their first semester in Design Technology developing a wide range of exciting and practical new skills, with a strong focus on embroidery work. This hands-on unit has encouraged students to explore creativity, precision, and patience as they progressed through the stages of textile design.
As part of their final project, students have been designing and creating their very own cushions. Earlier in the term, they explored a variety of hand embroidery techniques and applied these to stitch personalised designs onto the front panels of their cushions. These designs reflect their individual interests and personalities, adding a unique and meaningful touch to each piece.
This week marked an exciting milestone in their learning journey, as students were introduced to the sewing machine. They learnt how to correctly thread and operate the machines, while also gaining confidence in troubleshooting and using them safely. With increasing skill and enthusiasm, they are now using the machines to join their fabric panels and complete their projects.
It has been fantastic to witness so many students take pride in their work and enjoy learning these practical skills throughout the semester. Their creativity, persistence, and attention to detail have been impressive. We look forward to seeing their finished cushions on display at our Art & Technologies Exhibition later in the year.

I made a duck pillow based on the Stray Kids design because they’re my favourite K-pop group and I thought it would be something different. It was a bit hard to get the shape right at first, but I liked adding the little details. I really like design tech.

I chose the NBA logo for my cushion because I like basketball and thought it was a simple but recognisable design. It took a while to get the shape of the player right, but I’m happy with how it turned out. I learnt how to plan out my design properly and use different stitching techniques.

I decided to make the Kyrie Irving logo for my plush pillow because I’m a big fan of his and I thought the design would look cool. It was tricky to stitch the sharp lines, but I got better as I went. I learnt how to use the sewing machine and do neat embroidery.
