From Year 7
Last Friday, our Year 7 students went on an exciting excursion to Melbourne Zoo as part of their Science and STEAM learning. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for them to deepen their understanding of animal ecosystems, conservation, and the challenges faced by endangered Australian wildlife, and to observe endangered animals in action.
Students spent most of the day exploring a range of enclosures, engaging in conversations with experienced zookeepers, and witnessing animals displaying natural behaviours in their habitats. This experience helped link in-class learning to real-world examples and also fostered a stronger appreciation for the conservation initiatives led by Zoos Victoria.
Last week we went to the zoo, we got to pick our partners and chose an animal to learn about. When we were at the zoo, we had to fill a worksheet about the animal we chose. I chose the Tasmanian devil, and we went to the enclosure and filled the sheet in. After that we got to look at the animals we wanted and, in my opinion, the best animal was the seal or the tiger. They both were very entertaining, and the seal was swimming around under the water which was very fun to watch. The Tiger was fun to watch because it was walking around the enclosure instead of lying down like other ones. For lunch we could bring our own food or eat from a place at the zoo. Overall, the trip was very fun and we had lots of time to see every animal that we wanted to see.

Going to the zoo was a very memorable experience. The best part of going there was definitely being able to see all the animals with your friends and getting to be independent instead of having a chaperone the entire time. During the day we all had to fill out a booklet about a chosen animal. My group’s animal was the pygmy hippo, which overall is a great animal. If you ignore the smell. You also got put into groups with people from your class, which was a great opportunity to get to know more people. the trip was a highlight of year 7.

What I enjoyed was seeing all the different animals, seeing all the different enclosures. My group and I were studying about The Short Beaked Echidna. Even though we couldn’t see our animal, we had a fun time at the enclosure and seeing all the fun facts they gave us. This gave me an opportunity to work with other people in my class that I don’t normally work with. It helped me boost my confidence with talking to different people. The zoo trip is a memorable moment that I will carry throughout my high school years.
