Ready, Set, Revise!

From Year 7

Term 4 is an important time for our Year 7 students as they complete assessments, revise key concepts and consolidate their learning. With a busy few weeks ahead, developing effective study habits and maintaining a consistent routine will help students feel organised, prepared and confident.

Creating a Study Routine

This week in Coaching, Year 7 students created their own study timetables to help them plan for upcoming assessments and establish regular revision habits.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Follow their study timetable and prioritise upcoming assessments.
  • Break larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
  • Use their diary and SEQTA to check assessment dates and deadlines.

How parents can help:

  • Ask your child to share their study timetable and discuss their plans for the week.
  • Help them establish realistic study times that balance schoolwork with other commitments.

Using Revision Tools Effectively

Successful revision involves actively engaging with information rather than simply rereading notes. Students should use a variety of strategies to strengthen their understanding and memory.

Useful revision strategies include:

  • Creating flashcards for key terms and definitions.
  • Testing themselves without looking at their notes.
  • Completing practice questions and reviewing teacher feedback.
  • Creating summary sheets with key information and examples.

How parents can help:

  • Ask your child to explain a topic they have been learning about.
  • Encourage regular revision in short sessions rather than leaving everything until the night before an assessment.

Creating an Environment for Focused Work

A suitable study environment can improve concentration and productivity. Students should have a quiet, organised space where they can work without unnecessary distractions.

Students should aim to:

  • Keep their study space tidy and have materials ready before starting.
  • Put phones away and silence notifications.
  • Work in focused sessions, such as 25 minutes of study followed by a short break.

How parents can help:

  • Provide a quiet study space where possible.
  • Establish clear expectations around phones, gaming and other distractions during study time.
  • Encourage healthy routines, including adequate sleep and regular breaks.

Working Together for Success

Term 4 is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and finish Year 7 positively. With consistent preparation, effective revision strategies and support at home, students can develop greater confidence and independence.

Our message to Year 7 students is simple: plan ahead, revise regularly, minimise distractions and ask for help when needed. Small, consistent efforts can make a significant difference.
