Reconciliation & Reflection

From Year 8

So many wonderful things to be celebrating the past fortnight for our year 8 cohort.

Reconciliation Assembly

On Monday 26th May, the Year 8 students and our St Aloysius College Community came together for a Whole School Assembly for National Reconciliation Week. The presentation highlighted the importance of reconciliation, building relationships, respect and trust between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The assembly also featured a discussion on social justice and highlighting the recent Mercy Schools. Year 8 students participated in an activity where they analysed and unpacked several statements written by Indigenous Australians on the idea of hope.

Learning

This term in English, the Year 8s are exploring the world of speculative fiction with Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novel ‘The Hunger Games.’ As the term progresses, our students will delve deeper into the features that are used to create impactful and engaging stories and have a chance to flex their creative muscles. For many students, who are long-time lovers of the ‘Hunger Games’ franchise, this has been an excellent opportunity to actively participate in class discussions and critically evaluate what makes an influential novel. The English team cannot wait to see all the creativity that comes out of this unit. May the odds be ever in your favour!

Year 8 Japanese students had the opportunity to create their own character bento box to support their learning of Japanese food. They learned how to design and assemble the bento box featuring cute characters made from rice, vegetables, nori sheets and other ingredients. The hands-on experience not only allowed students to develop practical kitchen skills and encourage creativity, but also to understand this culture of bento making that is a common practice for many Japanese families.

Student reflections:

This week at St Aloysius we had a great week. In science we worked on organ systems. In STEAM we made marble runs. In English we are working on Writing a creative text based on the Hunger Games. This week has been a great week, and I really enjoyed it.

This week in 8F we are learning about coastal management solutions in humanities. We had to write a written proposal to the coastal beach’s government and write about a resort idea. It had to include types of coastal management techniques, sustainability techniques, separate ways to display social, economic, and aesthetic values and had to make it respect Aboriginal culture. We then had to make a representation of the resort.
