Science, STEM & Celebrations

From Year 8

It has been a busy and fruitful fortnight for the Year 8s.

Science

Students partook in the practical activity of dissecting a heart as part of their Body Systems unit. Through the hands on practical, students learnt to Identify the structure of the heart through a dissection, relate the structure of the heart to its function. Additionally, they have been making similarities and differences between a sheep heart and Human heart.

Melbourne University STEM excursion

8D and 8F attended on Friday the 6th June, 8B and 8E attended on the 11th June and lastly, 8A and 8C went on Friday the 13th June.

Science Gallery Melbourne is a space created for and with young people to explore the collision of art and science. Their programs foster the development of transferrable, 21st century skills. Saint Aloysius College & Science Gallery have a newly formed partnership, which enables our community easy access to the gallery and its facilities.

Students on this excursion participated in three workshops Future Foods, Sustainable Communities & Design it. In the Design It workshop students work through the Design Thinking framework. They create and pitch presentations showcasing their designs & learn how to effectively give feedback.

In the Future Foods workshop students investigate the current challenges of our food chain & the need for sustainable practices. They explore the strengths & weaknesses of insects as a ‘superfood’, develop a brand for their new insect-based product and work groups to make insect-based food.

In the Sustainable Communities workshop students explore what makes something ‘sustainable’ and apply their understanding to categorise and rate examples from around the world. Students develop an understanding of the costs and resources involved in manufacturing, shipping, and consuming products; and explore strategies for transforming supply chains from a linear to a circular economy.

A celebratory moment

Well done to Serena Saliba in 8C for receiving a ‘brilliant’ score in the Berthe Mouchette French poetry competition. She will take parts in the finals on the 22nd June.

In science this week we dissected a sheep's heart to help us better understand what goes on in the heart, although the room was smelly. Using the tools to take apart the heart was fun for most people, others not so much. Overall, it was a fun science lesson.

In food tech, we learnt plenty about healthy eating and planned our summative assessment of muffins. We had to plan the flavor, ingredients and method of making the muffins so we can make them in the next food tech session. After we planned our muffins, we baked some delicious cookies that everyone loved. My favorite part of the lesson was eating the delicious cookies after we baked them, and I am very excited for the muffins.

This week we've been busy preparing for upcoming assessments and learning many new things. We learnt all about business and economics in humanities, and experimented with printmaking using lino in art. We also investigated many different systems in our bodies, analysed texts in English, and even got to dissect a heart! Overall, we had an amazing week and had so much fun trying new things.
