From Year 8
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope our Year 8 students enjoyed a well deserved break and are returning refreshed and ready for the final chapter of their Year 8 journey. With a busy term ahead there are plenty of opportunities for students to continue growing, learning and celebrating their achievements.
Throughout Years 7 and 8, our wellbeing program has been guided by the theme CONNECT, supporting students to develop the skills and relationships needed to navigate the challenges and opportunities of adolescence. In Year 7, students explored Community, Optimism and Navigating, while Year 8 has focused on New Skills, Empowerment, Collaboration and Thrive. Each element builds on the last, encouraging students to strengthen their connections, develop confidence and recognise their capacity for growth.
This term, we turn our attention to Thrive: striving for personal excellence, reflecting on growth and learning to flourish in a range of environments. Thriving is not about getting everything right the first time; it is about recognising progress, responding constructively to setbacks and developing the confidence to keep moving forward. A skill that requires, resilience, perseverance and an understanding of self and one that our Year 8’s have honed throughout this year.
A key focus this term is helping students recognise how they can respond when situations feel challenging. We are encouraging them to use three simple strategies:
- Reframe: What else could I tell myself? Consider a different perspective and replace unhelpful thinking with a more constructive approach.
- Act: What is a useful thing I can do? Identify one practical step that can help move the situation forward.
- Connect: Who can help me? Recognise when to seek support from friends, family, teachers or other trusted people.
These strategies remind students that while they have an important role in their own growth, thriving does not have to happen alone. The ability to ask for help, learn from others and draw strength from the community around us is an important part of building resilience and wellbeing. Our connections with others can help us navigate uncertainty, celebrate achievements and find a way forward when things feel difficult.
As our Year 8 students approach the final weeks of the school year, we look forward to seeing them put these skills into practice, embrace new opportunities and continue developing the independence and confidence that will support their transition into Year 9.
We wish all our Year 8 students a positive and purposeful Term 4. We look forward to watching them thrive together!
