From Year 9
After a busy and eventful Term 1, we trust the holidays offered a well-deserved opportunity to reflect, recharge, and enjoy precious time with family and friends.
As we begin this new term, I encourage the Year 9 students to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, placing an emphasis on stepping out of their comfort zones. It is through embracing challenges and new experiences that personal and academic growth occurs. We encourage students to maintain their positivity and enthusiasm as they progress on their journey as life-long learners, consistently embodying the Mercy Values in their interactions within our College community and beyond. Term 2 will also provide an opportunity to set new goals, explore new ideas and support each other in various learning environments.
This term, we will work together to nurture resilience, curiosity and a growth mindset, ensuring that each student feels empowered to reach their full potential. Throughout Term 2 and Term 3, students will engage in House Co-Curricular activities, collaborating with peers from different year levels to foster connection, creativity, and teamwork. In our Year 9 Wellbeing Program this term, students will engage in a range of learning activities and experiences to develop life skills as they transition through adolescence.

In Food technology we had the opportunity to make our Asian based dish, I chose to make a Prawn Pad Thai which I enjoyed so much. Although it was a bit of a challenge having to make it in a short period of time, overall, it was an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It was nice being able to do it independently which made me feel more confident cooking in the kitchen and I'm very happy with the outcome and being able to share this experience with friends.

This term in Food Tech we have been making foods from around the world building up to this assessment. This assessment was based on making an Asian noodle dish and my choice was to make Lo Mein noodles. It was a tough challenge to be cooking against the clock but I was successful, and I really enjoyed doing this assessment. I would love to do it again, overall, my dish turned out great and I had a great time.

So far in Art 3D we have been able to learn about an artist named Vipoo Srivilasa who is a Thai artist who creates sculptures, some key things he has in his pieces are repetition and the colours blue and gold, using some of his pieces as inspiration we were able to start sketching and coming up with an idea of what we want to create. Once we had completed our sketches and decided on our final design, we were able to start playing with clay and making a small draft before our final piece. Once we were happy, we got to finally start on our finished product making sure we hollowed out pieces as well as smoothing rough edges. Before we finished term 1, we got to be creative with clay with some people hopping on the pottery wheel, some making plates and bowls. Over the holidays, many of the Sculptures got placed in the kiln and fired ready for us to start painting on underglaze. Today in class we are able mix different colours trying to achieve what our designs were. We are having so much fun and can't wait to see how they turn out.

In term one for Art 3D we started to make a ceramic piece inspired by Vipoo Srivilasa who is a Thai man that was born in Australia. In term one we have learnt about the techniques that Vipoo would use such as scratching, scoring and moulding, we have also learnt about how to use the pottery wheel and how this makes it way more efficient to make things such as bowls, plates and cups. In today’s lesson we got to start painting our sculptures exploring all the colours and styles that we have been researching in 3D Art most of last term.
