Year 10 Theatre Studies

Hadestown

On Wednesday 21 May, our Year 10 Theatre Studies students had the opportunity to attend a live performance of the award-winning musical Hadestown at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

This contemporary retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was both inspiring and engaging. The music, performed with incredible skill by the Australian cast, was a standout element and left a lasting impression on the students.

The production offered a dynamic and imaginative interpretation of the myth, with creative use of lighting, set, costume, sound, and movement. It provided students a valuable opportunity to see key concepts we've been exploring in class—such as conventions of Greek theatre, production roles, and acting skills—applied in a professional context.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, and the students responded with great enthusiasm. Seeing the work of professional artists firsthand helped deepen their understanding of theatre and sparked meaningful discussions back in the classroom. Beyond the curriculum, experiences like this help foster a deeper appreciation for live performance and the creative work that goes into making theatre.

Below are some student reflections about the performance.

On the 21st of May, the Year 10 Theatre Studies class went to see Hadestown at Her Majesty’s Theatre. We went because it’s based on Greek mythology, which we’ve been learning about in class. The show told the story of Orpheus and Eurydice in a modern and creative way. The set, lighting and live music were really impressive and added a lot to the mood. It was a really engaging performance and helped us understand how ancient stories can be retold in new ways.

The excursion to see the Musical Hadestown was a riveting opportunity and experience. The excursion introduced us to elements of Greek theatre that the production had incorporated into the play such as the stage being shaped as an amphitheatre and the small chorus/ensemble. Very surreal and altogether wonderful.
