Fundraising, Partnerships and Leadership

Mercy in Action

The end of Term 3 saw the introduction of some important new Social Justice Initiatives.

McAuley Community Services for Women – fundraising and awareness

In lieu of the Winter Sleepout, staff and students supported women and children facing homelessness by selling cups of hearty soup prepared by Mr Bina and the Food Technology staff to hungry teachers during their lunch break. The Social Justice Club also organised a snack stall to fundraise and raise further awareness of these important issues.

Partnership with Central Melbourne Rotary Club

Students and Staff have once again started to volunteer at Bunnings Sausage Sizzles and plans for further joint activities. The funds will be used for important Social Justice initiatives in our local area that are supported by Rotary. We are working more closely with Central Melbourne to align our outreach programs and fundraising to create a bigger impact to those in need in our community. We encourage more students in Years 10-12 to sign up to an upcoming event.

Lauren Marquet, Mercy in Action Leader, attended the Rotary Club’s breakfast meeting in September and presented on our College’s current and future plans for Mercy in Action and confirmed our ongoing commitment to this important collaboration.

Year 10 Leadership in Mercy program

In September, we launched our new Leadership in Mercy Program for all Year 10 students. Students will dedicate four Wednesday afternoons to Social Justice Initiatives. Fallon students have established a Year 7 mentoring and tutoring program; Verdon is currently planning the design and build of a new Herb garden for the Food Technology department; Scully students are visiting residents at Mercy Place Aged Care with activities planned to foster intergenerational relationship building; and McAuley students are travelling to St Mary’s House of Welcome to support people experiencing homelessness.
