Safe Online Environments
In a time when technology is intricately integrated into our daily lives, it is crucial to help young people navigate the digital landscape safely. Last week, our Year 7 – 9 parents and carers had the chance to join an online session led by Sam from The Cyber Safety Project, providing vital insights on how to better safeguard and assist children in the online space. The session emphasised the significance of fostering safe and healthy digital habits from an early age. With practical advice and timely information, parents and carers were encouraged to engage in more meaningful conversations with their children about responsible and positive interactions on social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps. Key topics covered included: - Effectively managing screen time, with strategies to balance gaming, social media, and offline activities. - Understanding digital rights and responsibilities, equipping children to be informed digital citizens. - Protecting one’s digital reputation while promoting respectful and considerate communication online. - Recognising and reporting unsafe behaviour, providing parents and carers with tools to proactively address concerning online interactions. The Cyber Safety Project’s engaging and relatable presentation style, complemented by real-life examples, made the session both informative and enjoyable. The overall presentation helped our parents and carers to feel more equipped to support their child’s digital experience with knowledge, openness, and the necessary resources. We extend our gratitude to Sam and the team for their invaluable collaboration in empowering our school community with the understanding and tools needed to foster a safer and more respectful online environment for our youth.
Parents and cares can access more resources directly from the Cyber Safety Project website as well as more information about being safe online from websites such as the eSafety Commissioner and common sense media.
