Mercy In Action

Seeds of Justice

Refugee Week

On 18 June, a group of Year 8 and 9 students were successful in their applications to attend the annual Refugee Week Conference at the Mercy Hub in North Carlton.

This year’s Refugee Week theme is “A Million Stories” — each story is unique, and each one is powerful. Our students will learn more about the stories of people who have sought refuge in Australia through storytelling, reflection, and sharing a meal as a community.

Anti-Slavery Op Shop

Following the important learnings that came out of the recent Seeds of Justice Conference on the topic of Modern Slavery, the students have teamed up with the Social Justice Club to run an Anti-Slavery Op Shop at the College on 23 June. The Op Shop aims to educate students about the consequences of fast fashion and how we can take action to fight this ever-growing issue. All proceeds from the Op Shop will go to ACRATH – Australian Catholic Religious Against the Trafficking of Humans. We encourage students to bring in good condition clothes, accessories and books. All leftover goods will be picked up by the Salvos at the end of the day. Students will be able to purchase items at low prices using cash/coins (ideal) and also card transactions will be available with physical cards.

AMSSA

The next part of the online AMSSA conference will be hosted by Mt Lilydale Mercy College at the end of this term. Our year 9 and 10 representatives will meet with students from other Mercy Schools and participate in the conference to continue to learn about global issues through the Mercy Lens, and how we can work together across Mercy schools to create lasting change.

Year 11 Mercy in Action Program

This brand new program has continued to provide great opportunities each Wednesday for Year 11 students not participating in ACS or VET. Last week, students welcomed two alumni back to the College

who now work for Young Mercy Links – Angela Scarafilo and Cassandra Prinzi. The past students spoke of the inspiration that St Aloysius provided for them to follow a path of Mercy and find fulfilment through Mercy in Action in their professional lives. They delighted the students with some old photos of the school including some staff members who still work at the College today!
