VCE VM Excursion

Road to Zero

Road to Zero at Melbourne Museum

Our Year 12 VCE VM students recently visited Melbourne Museum as part of their Literacy studies, where they had the exciting opportunity to pilot a new Road to Zero program focused on vehicle safety and how to choose a safe car.

Students began by exploring road safety statistics and examining key vehicle safety features. They were introduced to the HowSafeIsYourCar.com resource and analysed a car safety advertisement, discussing its key message, target audience and persuasive techniques.

In the Learning Studio, students worked collaboratively using interactive touchtable technology to create their own short video advertisements aimed at young drivers. Using pre-shot footage, sound effects and music, they produced engaging ads that incorporated factual evidence and memorable slogans.

Students also experienced the immersive Road to Zero exhibition space, where they took part in a virtual reality journey travelling from 1970 to 2055. Through interactive displays, they explored the science behind road safety, the latest in vehicle technology and road design, and how we can all contribute to reducing road trauma.

This experience gave students the opportunity to apply their literacy skills in a real-world context, while building their awareness of road safety and the importance of making informed vehicle choices.

Today our VCE-VM class visited the Melbourne Museum’s Road Safety exhibition as part of the ‘Road to Zero’ mission. We learnt about the importance of road safety and what we can do to make the roads a safer place for everyone, especially as we get closer to getting our P plates.

We also learnt about car safety and how safe modern cars are, which was interesting to learn since many of us will soon be purchasing our own cars.

As part of the visit, we also explored the interactive exhibition space where we participated in VR and a range of other activities related to road safety. One of the highlights was creating our own advertisements, where we used pre-filmed clips and developed our own slogans to help promote the importance of road safety.

Overall, we had a very fun and informative experience at the Melbourne Museum today, and we definitely took away many important lessons from the visit.
