Year 11 Reflection Day
Year 11 Reflection Day gave us the chance to step outside our usual routines here at St Aloysius College and explore the beliefs and traditions that shape different communities. Our visit to the Albanian Australian Islamic Society Mosque in Carlton North assisted in our understanding of the importance regarding prayer, discipline, and unity in Islamic belief. Observing the quiet respect and history within the space made it clear how deeply faith can guide everyday life.
We then visited the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in South Yarra, providing us the knowledge about the significance of Jewish history, tradition, and practices within the religion. Our cohort provided many questions allowing us to expand our knowledge on the faith and the overall concept of religion.
St Patrick’s Cathedral offered our school in-depth discovery on what a traditional Catholic mass consists of, we were able to share this experience with the public, observing the ongoing faith within the community and how different faiths can shape individuals in everyday values. Its grand architecture and peaceful atmosphere allowed us to endure a tranquil and restful environment providing deep reflection. The cathedral highlighted how Christianity expresses faith through symbolism, art, and reflection. Each visited place of worship was unique and distinctive, sharing different practices and history. Despite this, they all shared core values such as compassion, respect, and a desire for meaning. In an empathetic gesture, Father Jaycee Napoles offered the mass for Chris and his family.
We ended the day with a small gathering in our school chapel, bringing together everything we had learned. This final moment reminded us that the education and history of other faiths encourages open‑mindedness and internal thought. Overall, Reflection Day helped us appreciate the diversity around us and recognise the values that connect us.
