Form Year 7
Our Year 7 students have achieved so much this year. They have navigated the transition to secondary school, formed new friendships, developed greater independence and contributed enthusiastically to the academic and social life of St Aloysius College.
As the students become increasingly comfortable and confident in their new environment, it is natural that some will begin to test boundaries. At this busy stage of the year, they can also become tired, restless or more easily distracted. This provides us with an important opportunity to revisit the positive habits that help every student feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
A recent Australian study into student behaviour has highlighted the importance of protecting classroom learning time. The research reinforces something we already know: even small choices—such as listening when someone is speaking, remaining focused, following instructions promptly and allowing others to work - can make a meaningful difference to the whole class.
At St Aloysius, we want our classrooms to be places where students feel comfortable contributing ideas, asking questions, making mistakes and challenging themselves. A positive classroom belongs to everyone, and each student plays an important role in creating it.
For our Year 7 students, taking responsibility for learning means:
- arriving prepared and ready to participate
- listening respectfully to teachers and classmates
- using lesson time productively
- completing assigned work to the best of their ability
- responding positively to reminders and feedback
- considering how their choices affect others
These are skills that develop over time. Our students will not always get everything right, and making mistakes is a normal part of growing up. What matters is their willingness to reflect, take responsibility and make a better choice next time.
Families can support this development through simple conversations at home. Asking, “What did you contribute to your classes today?” or “How did you help create a positive learning environment?” encourages students to recognise that they are active participants in their education.
Our Year 7 students bring tremendous energy, humour, creativity and kindness to St Aloysius. They are an important part of what makes our College community so special - both socially and academically. By continuing to work together, we can help them channel these strengths positively and finish the year with confidence, purpose and pride.
