Building on Foundations

From Year 7

It has been a positive and purposeful start to Term 2 for our Year 7 cohort. Students have returned from the break refreshed, and it has been wonderful to reconnect and hear about their holiday experiences. More importantly, they are continuing to settle back into the routines of school life.

Term 1 was centred on supporting students in their transition to secondary school and building a sense of belonging, forming new friendships, and becoming familiar with the expectations, routines, and environment of the College. We are proud of the way our Year 7 students embraced this phase, showing resilience and openness as they navigated a significant milestone.

As we move into Term 2, there is a clear and intentional shift towards academic growth. The focus is now on strengthening learning habits and ensuring students have a strong understanding of academic expectations across all subjects. This includes being organised, using diaries effectively, completing homework consistently, and being prepared to engage actively in each lesson.

Last week, students received their Approaches to Learning reports, which provide valuable insight into their learning behaviours and habits. These reports are an important tool for reflection and goal setting. Learning Conferences, held on Tuesday, provided a valuable opportunity for students, families, and teachers to discuss progress and identify clear next steps for continued improvement.

We encourage families to take time to reflect on the ATL reports and Learning Conferences, considering what they indicate about students’ work habits, strengths, and areas for growth. These insights can guide meaningful conversations about how students can continue to improve and, where needed, whether additional support such as ACE may be beneficial.

Term 2 is already shaping up to be a busy and engaging period for our Year 7 students. A range of opportunities, including House competitions, public speaking events, Run Club, Chess Club, and other co-curricular activities, will allow students to build connections, develop new skills, and deepen their understanding of what it means to be a Mercy student within our community.

Alongside this academic focus, we continue to prioritise respectful relationships and a positive learning environment. Students are encouraged to demonstrate responsibility, support one another, and contribute to a culture where all learners can thrive.

Thank you to our Year 7 students for their strong start to the term, and to families for your continued support in reinforcing routines and expectations. We look forward to seeing our students continue to grow in confidence, independence, and academic success throughout Term 2.
