From Year 8
Each morning, our Year 8 students arrive at school carrying a backpack filled with the essentials; books, a laptop, stationery and a lunchbox. They also arrive carrying a backpack far less visible but just as important.
This invisible backpack is made up of everything students bring with them before the first lesson even begins. It includes their life experiences, family traditions, culture, interests, talents, values, friendships, challenges and the skills they have developed both at school and beyond. These are often referred to as students' funds of knowledge or the unique understandings and experiences that shape who they are, how they learn and the strengths they contribute to our community.
At St Aloysius College, our role is not simply to fill students' backpacks with more information. It is to recognise the strengths they already possess while helping them add new knowledge, skills and character that will prepare them for the next year and beyond.
Throughout Year 8, students continue adding to this invisible backpack each day. They develop resilience by persevering through challenges, confidence by sharing ideas and trying something new, organisation through managing increasing academic expectations, and compassion by working collaboratively with others and living out the Mercy values in their everyday interactions.
Whether participating in House co-curricular activities, analysing a novel, conducting Science investigations, preparing meals in Food Studies or taking on leadership opportunities, students are building capabilities that extend well beyond the classroom. These experiences encourage curiosity, independence, teamwork and critical. They develop qualities that cannot always be measured on a report but which are essential for lifelong learning.
The Mercy values remain at the heart of this journey. They remind us that education is about developing the whole person and young people who not only achieve academically, but who also act with courage, respect, compassion, justice and hospitality in the communities they serve.
As we begin Semester 2, we look forward to continuing to add to every student's invisible backpack, ensuring they leave Year 8 not only with new knowledge, but with the confidence, character and practical skills to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
