From Year 8
There is a point in every school year when the novelty wears off, the work starts piling up and the finish line can feel a little further away than expected. For our Year 8 students Term 3 is that point. With assessments building and preparations beginning for Year 9, it is a valuable time to pause, reset and focus on the habits that support sustained success.
Students are also beginning to look ahead to Term 4 examinations in English and Mathematics. While this can feel daunting, the best preparation is not a last minute study marathon. It is the consistent work students do now such as engaging in lessons, completing classwork, asking questions, reviewing content and seeking support when they need it.
Study vs. Simply Getting the Work Done
One important distinction students are learning is that completing work and studying are not always the same thing. Finishing a worksheet or homework means the task is complete while studying means actively revisiting, practising and thinking about what has been learned.
A few simple habits can make a significant difference:
- Plan ahead: Using your diary and a calendar to see what is coming.
- Break it down: Short, regular study sessions are more manageable than leaving everything until the night before.
- Practise, don't just read: Test yourself, retrieve key information and explain concepts in your own words.
- Ask for help early: Teachers, the Learning Support Team and opportunities such as ACE can provide valuable support.
Protect your time: Build study into the week alongside sport, co-curricular activities, family time and rest.
Looking After the Brain Behind the Books
Academic preparation is only one part of the picture. Students cannot do their best learning if they are running on empty. The Australian Government recommends that young people
- Participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day
- Receive 9–11 hours of uninterrupted sleep
- Eat a wide variety of foods across the five food groups and drink plenty of water.
For students, this doesn't need to become complicated. Move your body, eat regular nutritious meals, drink water, get enough sleep and give your brain time to switch off.
The Bigger Picture
Term 3 is not about expecting students to have everything figured out. It is about helping them develop the independence to recognise what they need to do, plan for it and follow through.
As Year 8 students look towards Year 9 and beyond, these habits become increasingly important. Organisation, consistency, resilience, healthy routines and knowing when to ask for support are skills that will serve them well far beyond their next assessment.
At the beginning of Term 3, our Year 8 students were challenged with an important message: there is no substitute for hard work. Success is built through consistent effort, preparation and a willingness to keep working when things become challenging. The habits students build now of turning up, putting in the effort, asking for help and following through will continue to serve them well long after Year 8.
