VCE VM Excursion
As part of their VCE VM Literacy studies, students recently stepped outside the classroom to explore the world of publishing and podcasting through two hands-on workshops.
The day began at the State Library, where students participated in an Independent Publishing Workshop. They explored the creative process of producing published texts, including developing ideas, considering an intended audience, and making decisions about language and visual design. Students then put these skills into practice by creating their own zines.
Students also visited the World of the Book exhibition, learning about the history of books and how they have been created and produced across different periods. The exhibition provided an opportunity to see the evolution of publishing and the importance of design and presentation.
In the afternoon, students headed to SYN Studios in the RMIT University precinct for a Podcasting 101 Workshop. In a professional studio setting, students were introduced to scripting, recording and producing podcasts. Working in groups, they developed their own podcast content, with one group exploring social media and artificial intelligence, while the other delved into the world of aviation mysteries.
The excursion gave students an opportunity to develop their creativity and communication skills while applying the literacy concepts they study to real-world media contexts.

Our VM Literacy excursion was such a fun day because we got to learn outside the classroom and try lots of new things! First, we went to the State Library, where we learnt about the history of zines and got to see some famous and very old ones. We then used them as inspiration to design and make our own zines, which was a really creative part of the day.
After lunch, we headed to RMIT to learn how podcasts are made. One group created a podcast about social media, its effects on kids and concerns about AI, while another made a mystery podcast about MH370, the Malaysian Airlines flight that disappeared. We learnt about teamwork, creativity, communication, and how to make an interesting podcast.
Overall, it was a really enjoyable day because we got to be creative and work with our friends. We are grateful to Ms Donato and Ms Mizuno for making sure we had a fun day in the city.
