From the Principal

Pope Francis has asked that during the month of July we pray for the elderly, so that they may be “teachers of tenderness”. The Pontiff stated that our world, filled with war, greatly requires “a true revolution of tenderness”, and explaining how the elderly can help take the hard edge off society.

On Wednesday the 22nd June, the Year 10 Sports Development class was given the opportunity to visit the Australian Sports Museum at on an MCG Excursion. It gave the Year 10 class the opportunity to further our knowledge and development of what we had been working on throughout Semester One.

Connections

Japanese Sister School

This year, we launched the inaugural penpal program with our sister school in Japan - Kyoto Seibo Gakuin. Each student studying Japanese at St Aloysius College has been paired up with a penpal from our sister school and has had opportunities to exchange letters and emails written in a mixture of English and Japanese.

Year 10 Art

NGV Excursion

The Year 10 Art class were fortunate to conclude the first semester of their 2022 studies with an excursion to the NGV Australia, viewing Top Arts ’22, followed by a viewing of Australian Portraiture: Who Are You, which linked in with their own studies of portraiture and the creation of a self-portrait.

Language and Culture

Italian

The Italian Students at St Aloysius have certainly enjoyed and appreciated learning the Italian language and the cultural differences. To learn a foreign language is to have an extra window from which to look at the world. Students have enjoyed learning about Italian architecture, food, fashion and how the geography of a country can influence its culture.

July Report

Debating

The Debating Co-Curricular has been running since Term One, and the Senior DAV (Debaters Association Victoria) competition has now concluded for 2022. This year the College registered three Year 9 debating teams and one Year 10 team.

Update

Sport

The ACS winter season continues throughout Term 3 and we wish our Year 7 Netball & Basketball teams all the best in the second half of the season!

From Year 7

Beginning any new journey is fraught with ‘false starts’, new rituals and deeper understandings of yourself and where you fit in within the cosmos. As our Year 7 students explored the text Things a Map Won’t Show You, they were encouraged to consider this concept as they embarked on their secondary school journey.

From Year 8

The Year 8 students have certainly started Term 3 energized and refreshed. The time has come for the students to choose their 2023 Subject selections, where they were required to choose their core language and 6 elective subjects for Year 9. The students were excited to exercise greater control over their learning and to begin to refine their interests.

From Year 9

The Year 9 students have had a wonderful start to Term 3. There is a lovely energy with this year level. Many students did not stop over the holidays coming in for Production rehearsals and they continue to rehearse long hours so that they were ready for the very first show to the Primary School Students on Wednesday 20th July.

From Year 10

The second half of the Academic Year means that Year 10 students change their electives. Students are offered a range of options throughout the year including subjects such as Visual Arts, Visual Communication Design, STEM, Literature, VCE Food Studies, Philosophy, Textiles, Biology Unit 1, Drama and Health and Human Development Unit 1.

From Year 11

I would like to open this newsletter segment by welcoming everyone back to term 3 ! Although this is a long term, students are now getting close to stepping up to year 12. This was really felt when they did their primary subject selection in week 1.

From Year 12

Year 12s have made a great start to Term 3, returning from the holidays feeling refreshed. Many students attended holiday classes during the break, but also had the opportunity to slow down and be ready for the busy weeks ahead Last term and continuing through to this term the Year 12s participated in sessions relating to the VTAC application process, which opens on the 1st of August.
